October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month

While the word "cybersecurity" might sound like something only IT professionals need to worry about, the truth is it affects everyone. From checking your email and scrolling through social media to online shopping or banking, if you’re connected to the internet, you have a role to play in staying safe online.

Here’s what Cybersecurity Awareness Month is all about and what you can do, even without a tech background, to protect yourself.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is an annual effort to help people understand the risks of being online and to promote good habits that keep individuals safe from cyber threats.

There is no doubt cybercrime is on the rise. Cyber criminals are not just targeting SMBs and big corporations, they are also after individuals like you and I. Everyone is a target and if they can trick you into giving up your password, clicking a fake link, or sharing personal info, they can steal your money, identity, and everything you have ever worked hard for.

Some tips everyone, regardless of age or tech skills, can follow to stay safe online :

1) Use a password manager. You only have to memorize one password (the master password) and every other passwords are saved in the password manager.

2) Turn on Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) wherever it is offered. It makes your account harder to get into even if your password is compromised.

3) Think before you click. Cyber criminals send emails and/or texts that look real but aren’t. Don’t click links from people you don’t know. Even if you know the person, if you have doubts call before clicking.

4) Update your devices. Updates are very important. They fix security vulnerabilities that cyber criminals might try to exploit.

You don’t need to be a tech expert to protect yourself online. A few simple habits can go a long way. Take a few minutes to check your passwords, turn on MFA, and always remember to think before you click. Stay Safe everyone!
